The Simons Foundation, OpenAI and Anthropic announced a combined $15 million in funding and resources on October 15 to help mathematicians assess AI-assisted results and shape shared standards for using the tools. The foundation will manage awards through an open call for proposals.
The announcement follows OpenAI’s October 6 release of mathematical results produced by an internal model. The new effort funds work around such claims: workshops and other programs will help researchers evaluate AI-assisted results, learn to use the tools and discuss how they should be used in mathematics.
OpenAI says it is contributing $5 million to the Simons initiative and will provide models and computing resources to researchers the foundation supports. Simons says Anthropic will also provide AI tools and computing resources, extending the partnership’s resources beyond mathematics to basic science. The foundation, rather than either AI company, will manage and award the funding.
This is a plan to support examination and discussion, not a report that any particular AI-generated proof has passed independent review. The announcement does not give the partners’ full funding split, grant sizes, application deadlines or terms for accessing the companies’ models.
